Kailua
Kailua is a place of much natural beauty. The most significant features of Kailua are the bay, the mountains, and the wetlands. Kailua Bay is a magnificent place symbolizing the regional quality of the community. Kailua Beach and nearby Lanikai have been on the "Worlds Best Beach" lists by several publishers for many years.
Kailua, the town of 38,600 on windward Oahu, has that effect on people. Walled off from Honolulu by the corrugated cliffs of the Koolau Range, Kailua has none of the dazzle of touristy Waikiki—no hotel towers, ultra-lounges, or high-priced shopping opps. Instead, it offers the blood pressure–lowering pleasures of an unpretentious small town, but one with a supremely blissful, tourist-free setting. The setting stretches out along Kailua Bay, with three cartoon-looking islands—Flat and the Mokuluas, or “twin islands”—floating just offshore.
Kailua Beach Park, toward the bay’s southern end, regularly garners awards as one of Hawaii’s top beaches, but nearby Kalama and Lanikai are just as good—some would say better. In past centuries, Kailua’s beaches and beauty drew vacationing Hawaiian royalty, but these days the town is pleasantly eclectic.
The atmosphere is low-key. There’s a great twice-a-week farmers’ market. No hotels, but you can find homes and condos to rent at www.HawaiianOceanfront.com. No four-star dining, but enough bistros and cafes to satisfy the ex-urbanites who now commute to work in Honolulu, and a terrific shave-ice stand.
These pleasures—and, of course, the beaches—give Kailua a strong gravitational pull: Once people visit, they start thinking about a second trip, or a third. The most famous returnee is President Barack Obama, who spent time here as a child and who has visited regularly on First Family vacations.
The single family homes in Kailua range from $800,000+. The condos range from $400,000+. As of Jan 2019, there are currently 98 Kailua homes on the market from $839,000k – $28,500,000.
Kailua Beach Park
Set foot here and you’ll see why Kailua Beach consistently lands on many a ‘Best Beaches’ lists. Three miles of crescent-shaped shoreline covered in powdery fine sand meet the clear turquoise waters, which blend seamlessly into the skyline. Plus, the water temperature averages 75 degrees year-round. The warm water temperature, steady offshore trade winds, and a protective reef make Kailua Beach the ideal spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Kayaking and stand up paddleboarding are also popular. Enjoy the view of the nearby offshore islands of Moku Nui, Moku Iki, and Flat Island. If you get too much sun, there are shade trees lining the sand, as well as picnic tables, a bike path, bathrooms and showers, and easy parking.
Lanikai Beach
“Lanikai” translates to “heavenly sea”; one glimpse and you’ll understand the moniker. Please note that we are putting this in second place only because Kailua is more well-known, and Lanikai lacks the length of beach. Lanikai is amazing!!!
